Counterterrorism Ideas for Day One
How can the next president--and his or her allies across the world--create a more effective counterterrorism policy? As Iraqis battle with suicide bombers, Afghanistan fights a resurgent Taliban, and bin Laden evades capture in the mountains of Central Asia, this remains a critical question for the next administration.
Watch Alistair Millar and Eric Rosand from the Center on Global Counterterrorism Cooperation address these and other issues in Risks & Rewards of a Multilateral Counterterrorism Strategy, an event sponsored by the Better World Campaign and New America Foundation. And let us know what you think by weighing in below or adding your idea to the next president's agenda.
Happy Leap Day!
Every four years, in order to let the sun catch up to our calendar, the world gets an extra day. That day happens to be today—“Leap Day,” the 29th of February.
How much can really happen in just one day? Well, history tells us that the actions of just one day can in fact change the world profoundly:
- On June 12, 1987, standing at the border of a divided Berlin, Ronald Reagan symbolized the American commitment to freedom and democracy by challenging Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall,” ushering in the beginning of the end of the cold war.
- On December 14, 1995 Bill Clinton, along with Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian leaders, signed the Dayton Accords—a treaty negotiated by a bipartisan team of American leaders—effectively ending the bloody conflict in Bosnia that had claimed over 100,000 lives in three years.
- On February 11, 1945, at the Yalta conference, an ill and exhausted Franklin Delano Roosevelt negotiated Soviet leader Joseph Stalin’s commitment to joining the United Nations, guaranteeing the survival and expansion of the UN.
- On January 28, 2003, in his State of the Union Address, George W. Bush announced the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief—at $15bn, the single largest global health commitment in history.
This year, we essentially have an extra day to work toward achieving the goals we care most about. If you were President, what would you do with this once-a-term opportunity? Tell us your “Leap Day” ideas here!

Check out On Day One and UN Dispatch team member Mark Goldberg on Blog Talk Radio with Ed Morrissey from Captain's Quarter's. Tune it to Mark and Ed discussing where the next president should travel to first, the "9 For '09" issues, was well as many of YOUR ideas for the next president!
Welcome to On Day One!
Should we leave Iraq? Demand reparations from the Iraqis? These were a couple of Bob Landry's ideas for our next president On Day One. The question is—do you agree? And if not, what are your ideas?
Welcome to On Day One, a project of the Better World Campaign, which works to build a stronger relationship between the United States and the United Nations. Over the course of the next year, we'll be building a discussion, based on your ideas, about how the next president can offer a bold new vision for American foreign policy, and how international cooperation can be harnessed to address the world's most critical challenges.
Whether you think America should end the cowboy diplomacy, shut down Guantanamo Bay or support democracy in Pakistan, we want you to help set the agenda of the next president.
At OnDayOne.org you can:
- Post your ideas (including videos) for the next president
- Vote on and discuss other people's ideas
- Tell the presidential candidates (and friends and family) what you think
A new U.S. president will take office on January 20, 2009. We hope you'll join us by getting started today to help set his or her agenda On Day One.
