Executive order announcing the transfer of all Guantanamo Bay prisoners into civilian jails within 7 days, and either release or arrainment in civilian courts on charges pertaining to laws in force at the time of their arrest within 30 days. Seriously, they've been there for 7 years now, if the Government doesn't have enough evidence to give them a fair trial it never will.
The next President's Oath of Office should omit the phrase "to the best of my ability." The Constitution is the supreme law of the land and if a candidate cannot assure the people he will abide by it, then he/she is not worthy of the Office. The current holder of the Office has disgrced it, hopefully not beyond restoration. No more "signing statements," they are unconstitutional. No more abuse of Presidential powers without impeachment proceedings; no more appointment incompetent cronies.
The key to world peace is the equitable distribution of the world's resources, which means the ending of world hunger and poverty through international co-operation. The causes that lead to world hunger, poverty, and lack of all sorts are the very same causes that lead to war. Humanity must recognize itself as a unit, one great family. The natural, technological and human resources of the world belong to everyone. Sharing creates the trust and justice which lead to peace.
Look into human rights abuses in mental hospitals, and the problems of big pharma not doing enough research on why people are dying from medications (diabetes for one from neuroleptics) and to provide better funding and total redesign of the mental hell system...to also make it illegal once and for all to experiment on mentally ill labeled people without their consent (didn't they do this somewhere else, like in Nazi Germany for instance?) To recognize mad pride as a civil rights movement.
First of all, try learning from the mistakes of the past, instead of repeating them. 9/11 changed NOTHING. It was simply business as usual for the human race, as was America's response to it. Once again, the deaths of thousands of people was used as a premise for the unlawful and immoral invasion of another nation and the killing of it's citizens, all in the name of greed and power. My agenda? Hold the Bush administration and it's masters culpable for their crimes against humanity.
Create a Department of Peace with the goal of abolishing WMDs and reducing occupations and interventions to zero over the next decade. Since virtually the entire US government is supportive of militarism, the president should begin a tradition of having at least this one member of her cabinet who is a pacifist, i.e., a person passionately committed to the nonviolent resolution of conflicts. Dennis Kucinich, a champion of the Dept. of Peace, would make an excellent Secretary of Peace.
The top priority of the next President will be to go after the corruption of the current administration. After that you can begin to work on such pressing measures as withdrawal from Iraq, global poverty, the growing food crisis, global warming, and national health care. But the first priority must be to set the house in order, and to see to it that the criminals who who misdirected the U.S. over the last seven years don't get away with it.
The whole world knows our one-sided Middle East policy. The Palestinians are suffering. We let Israel rule and occupy Palestinian land for 40 years and we don't care. We turn our heads while Israel adds more settlements and apartment buildings in East Jersusalem. Remember this: we will never be secure until there is a fair and just settlemnt to the Palestinian issue. If you want to be safe... start by solving the Palestinian issue.
Terrorists, our government, and germ commercials manipulate us through fear. Only we individuals can reclaim our courage. Life is risk, weigh relative dangers: hurricanes, chance of being killed by a terrorist, domestic violence, car accidents, heart attacks.
Then, get proactive. Begin to work on solutions to injustice and hopelessness feed frustration and rage. Creating hope and justice is much harder than dropping bombs, but we went to the moon, didn't we? Hard is not an excuse.
