Peacekeeping

No UN peacekeeping mission can be created or extended without the active agreement of the United States. Today, UN peacekeepers are maintaining peace, fostering reconciliation, promoting democracy, and building long-term stability in 18 missions around the globe, including in Darfur, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Haiti.

Pay our Peacekeeping dues

Pay our dues to the UN. The U.S. makes a big show of voting for UN Peacekeeping missions (a large part of their role on the Security Council) but we fail to fully fund our share. Voting is one thing, coming through with the cash is the most important part. As it is now, we are setting these important UN missions up for failure. So, Mr/Mrs next President, please, put your money where your mouth is

Stop the genocide in Darfur.

The next President needs to get serious about the genocide in Darfur. The janjaweed are happy to pretend to be cooperating with the international community while simply stalling for time. Stop them now!

The Basics

I believe we should pay our backed debts to the U.N. and illustrate that peace-keeping is a priority.

Make Bush responsible

The Iraqi people owe us nothing. They are victims. The "tribes" fighting each other need education as to history of religion and it's results. Greed and power are largely the problem. George Bush needs to be reprimanded for his part in murdering innocent people. "We the people" need a promise that war will be ended ASAP and intelligent actions pursued.

Global Peacekeeping

I want the next president to ask the citizens of all the countries where we have troops stationed whether or not they want the troops there. If they do, I believe we should allow them to stay for another year (at which time the citizens should be asked again). If they do not, I believe we should bring those troops home and put them to work on domestic environmental, humanitarian and educational issues in America.

U.N. Renewal

"On day 1" the next president should catch-up our debt to the U.N. and ask that the majority of that debt be used to help ease human suffering in Darfur. Next the incoming administration should ask the U.N. to place peacekeeping forces into the political turmoil that is Iraq. The forces should remain in Iraq at least as long as it takes the U.S. to remove its own troops. Additionally, the incoming president should do all he/she can do to assist and support the U.N. with climate change issues.

Bring back home all fighting troops

The president should withdraw all US fighting armies from around the world. We can not propose to keep the peace on one hand, and destroy it on the other. Only our peacekeeping armies should be deployed. This should be sold to all countries around the world.

Total yearly cost of UN peacekeeping to the U.S. is less than what we pay for three days in Iraq.

From A Better World Campaign (www.BetterWorldCampaign.org) The total yearly cost of UN peacekeeping to the U.S. is less than what we pay for three days in Iraq. Fully funding the United Nations is in our economic and security interests. The U.S. has agreed to pay our fair share at the United Nations, but we are failing to honor our commitments. Even as the UN effectively pursues U.S. interests by securing peace in places like Haiti and Sudan, the U.S. is now $1.5 billion in debt to the UN.
