Respect Human Rights and Promote Diplomacy
"America did not invent Human Rights. Human Rights invented America."
-US President Jimmy Carter
US standing in the world has receded as America's human rights record has been dealt blows by a failure to observe the rule of law and scandals like Abu Ghraib and the military prison in Guantanamo, Cuba. The US must repair its record and standing in the world.

Request for the Government of Sudan to sign CEDAW Immediately
The women of Southern Sudan under 67 members of the Civil Society Organizations operating within the New Sudanese Indigenous NGOs (NESI Network) and specifically the network’s Gender Equality Mainstreaming Sectoral Team would like to join the United Nations and the International Community in marking the International Women’s Day.
As we mark this international event, we would like to ask our government to commit herself and become part of “The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women - (CEDAW)’.
Observing that the disadvantaged status of women ‘is a global reality’, we emphasise that the diversity of Sudan as a nation and differences in development, approaches and progress toward achieving equality for women should not impede women and our nation standing together. Our national situations should not blind us from the strength we draw from each other. Concerted action by women everywhere, with everyone playing a part and the aid of CEDAW, is to changing women’s status for the better. CEDAW has the following on all women in the world:
Management and disaster preparedness, as well to ensure that women had an active role in all phases of disaster management. These aspects include services such as food, clean water, shelter and physical security, as well as health care, including reproductive health, psychological health and psychosocial support and education, taking into account the particular needs of women and girls. Moreover, it urges governments to address ‘gender equality dimensions of livelihood, security, land tenure, land rights, property and housing since they posed major challenges to women, in particular widows, women heads of households, women with disabilities and women who had lost family members in natural disasters.’
On the economic advancement of women, the resolution asks Governments to provide for enabling environments for women entrepreneurs and equal opportunities for women in the workplace; financial services for women in savings and lending and ownership, the promotion of equal access for women to information and communication technology-based economic activities and to information systems and improved technologies. The resolution also took into account the impact of globalization on women's labor and the role of international financial institutions on imposing liberalization policies.
On the situation of women and girls, the resolution urges the governments to ‘fully implement the Constitution and all international treaties to which the nation was a party; ensure that legislative, administrative and other measures support women's and girl's full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms; enable the full, equal and effective participation of women and girls in civil, cultural, educational, economic, political and social life throughout the country and at all levels; and ensure that women were able to register, run for office, campaign and vote in the upcoming national assembly elections.’
We are concerned about the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). We want it to be signed with immediate effect and it must be sign by government. This has not been in the past included in the peace Agreement, thereby relegating issues of women to the centre.
Recommendations
• Sudan should be part of the Global issues and treaties hence the CEDAW document must be included and signed by the government. This will ensure that women issues are articulated
• We are appealing to the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) to secure the women’s rights according to CEDAW and make resources available through an affirmative action for women to access the following:
o Education
o Legal aid
o Own land and property
o Work and
o Adequate health services.
We highly urge our government to sign CEDAW and implement it. We append the signatures of Organizations/Institution and individuals who are in support of this move.
Thank you,
