Restore? Relative to when - 1946? I really do not understand how Arab/Palastinian rabid desires to slaughter every Jew in Israel is our responsibility.

nobody can restore peace in the middle east bit the middle east--haven't we learned this lesson buy now?
But we should actively help mediate between countries and increase diplomatic efforts, yes!

Michaella Mintcheff (Unverified) at 1/23/2008 2:57PM

we should work to facilitate the peace process but understand that it will be exactly that - a long term process where we and all the parties involved will have to live up to our promises at the negotiating table.

As long as Muslims embrace the idea of death instead of peace there will be no peace. Western religions (Judaism and Christianity) count souls saved, not souls killed.

I don't think there will ever be peace, as we know, it in the middle east. Historically, we have seen this area of the world entrenched in tribal and religious war with itself.
That doesn't mean we shouldn't try to help mediate between warring factions, but this is a world concern that needs all nations, not just the U.S., applying pressure to bring about peace.
Peace will not be had until all parties involved want peace.

I dont know why we (US) are dealing like that in this eace process? why why protect the jews terrorists in israel? what will we gain of them? it seems that US happy with occupation, israel occuping palestinian land , and Us is doing the same with Iraq and Afghanistan, what a bad image ... , Next Pesident.. Mike, I'd take it back much further than 1946. There has never been peace in the Middle East, and the more recent Jewish/Arab conflicts are just one of many conflicts that have plagued the region throughout world history. That said, I do think that we as not only Americans but also as citizens of this planet have a responsibility to protect oppressed peoples everywhere.

Restore Peace in the Middle East... what a simplistic idea. While I might agree with this idea in theory, It that same kind of simplicity that got us into the the Iraq war, and the "war" on terror in the first place.

There's little hope for a restoration of peace in the middle east since there's no point in history which supported anything near peace in this region of the world. What a naive comment the original poster makes, but what a wonderful goal, were it only possible. There shall never be peace in the middle east because it is the stated goal of radical Muslims to eradicate every infadel from what they perceive to be their holy land. The holy land belongs to nearly every major world faith. Just ask a Yankee fan if the Red Sox deserve to exist and you will see in microcosm form the problem in the Middle East.

RESTORE peace in the Middle East?? WHEN has that EVER been the case? The people there have been fighthing for *thousands* of years! The notion that *any* U.S. president will bring peace to the Middle East is patently absurd.

William Smith (Unverified) at 1/29/2008 6:21PM

Step One to restoring Peace to Middle East is for all people involved, and Jews especially, to start telling the truth, not their propaganda. Jews have lived for 2 generations in a soup of their own propaganda: they are the perpetual victim (not factually accurate), and Arabs/Muslims/Iranians are hatefilled people, bent on killing jews and Americans for no good reason, that jews are innocent and only behaving with the finest of intentions. Point to a fact that says Jews have behaved in ways that have offended others and you will find yourself on the other end of an "anti semite" rant.

Jews need to grow up, look at themselves in the mirror and confront some truths about themselves. That's the first step to peace in the Middle East.
The second step is to allow Arabs, Muslims, Iraqis, and Iranians to tell their own stories, rather than allow Israel to continue to frame the stories of the peoples of the Middle East.

Without enormous USA financial and political support in the UN and elsewhere the Israeli state would be closer to the 1947 borders. Expelled Palestinians would have been allowed to return or would have been compensated for property stolen (as was done by Germany after the holocaust which compensated Jews)
With a viable Palestinian state (without the illegal settlements) unrest is likely to continue, as is the ongoing eye-for-an-eye war.

Benjamin2 (Unverified) at 2/6/2008 8:08PM

UN should force Israel to give up all settlements, and then protect Israel.

I believe this question to be fundamental to our situation with regard to the Middle East, radical Islamic fundamentalism and international terrorism.
THE PROBLEM: The 50-year long brutal, illegal Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Golan Heights and imprisonment of Palestinians in Gaza. Palestinians there believe the world has abandoned them to violent oppression and the theft of their lands by the Israelis--and grinding poverty. (Thousands of innocent Palestinians are killed by the Israeli Defense Forces and Israeli settlers each year.) Most Palestinians have no reason to hope that this will ever end. As a result, a small minority of Palestinians have resorted to terrorist violence against Israelis.
This ongoing situation has also created deep, generational hostility to the US throughout the Muslim world and has been used by Islamic radicals like al Qaeda to recruit those willing to conduct operations against the US.
Of course, other resentments toward the US exist, but few can be fully resolved until the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is resolved.
THE SOLUTION: The Israeli occupation must end. To accomplish this, the US must state flatly to the Israeli government that the $3 billion of US foreign aid to Israel will cease completely until the following actions take place:
1. The security wall must be removed from all West Bank land.
2. No new settlements or settlement expansions will take place.
3. The imprisonment of Gazans must cease.
4. Immediate negotiations with the Palestinians must take place to resolve the question of settlements, Jerusalem and the Palestinian diaspora.
In the meantime, international peacekeepers would provide peacekeeping troops to minimize both Israeli and Palestinian violence.
Once an agreement has been reached, the international peacekeepers may be retained until the bitterness subides.
