Pay our Peacekeeping dues
Pay our Peacekeeping dues
Kay at 11/9/2007 3:23PM
Pay our dues to the UN. The U.S. makes a big show of voting for UN Peacekeeping missions (a large part of their role on the Security Council) but we fail to fully fund our share. Voting is one thing, coming through with the cash is the most important part. As it is now, we are setting these important UN missions up for failure. So, Mr/Mrs next President, please, put your money where your mouth is

Enough embarrassment already! Start acting like a grown-up world citizen.
The greatest threat to our national security? None of the above. Imbecilic behavior and lies pose the greatest threat to our security. Who needs terrorists when our own bankers bring us to bankruptcy and all our industries move to other countries? Remember how easy it USED to be to get a job? Mortgages for hundreds of thousands of dollars given to people with no jobs, no credit references? Illegal aliens walking away with free medical care, free schools in their own language....free everything. No, "We have met the enemy and it is US".
free everything is not a problem. illegal aliens are not the problem. the problem is that we've never seen abundance before, and we think it's fragile. not if we share it. not if we recognize our responsibilities. yes, we have met the enemy and it is us. but only if like you, we continue to point fingers and wail about how everything has changed. we need to get back in the game and quit crying about it. pay our dues on all fronts.
Setting the UN up for failure? The UN doesn't need any help in that regard- it is a total failure and a waste of US tax dollars. The UN is a farce. Perhaps it is beyond repair, and a league of Democracies is what is needed.
The US already spends more money at the UN, including more money (and lives) on peacekeeping, than any other nation.
UN peacekeeping, when the US and a few other english-speaking democracies are not involved, invariably involves the UN 'peacekeepers' abusing the populace and trading sex for food.
Who the hell needs that? Get the UN out of the US

Can you be any more contradictory???? Nothing is free. Somebody ultimately pays the bill. That would be me and all other middle-class Americans. I encourage you and the original poster, Kay, to put your money where your mouth is and file an affidavit of support, form I-864 with the immigration dept. to offer your home, medical care, legal care, and reimbursement of taxpayer dollars so that a family here illegally may remain. As far as the UN goes; get it out of the US and let's look to join an organization who's real goal is dialogue and diplomacy and offers equal votes to member nations. Currently, that is not the case with the UN.
You know, for decades we carried the U.N. finanially Russia,France,Germany and other countries did not pay or support the U.N. and we paid well more than our share.
Do you think if we tried to pay our bill the UN might want a different currency than dollars? It is getting THAT bad.
re: NM
it is distinctly unamerican to meet opinions with an invocation to put your money where your mouth is. do we not have the right to free speech? are we not free? then i will use my right to continue advocating for what i believe is right, and it should not matter if i even have a house to offer; i pay taxes and i believe in the constitution.
unlike this country when it comes to the un, i have payed all of my dues. i wish only that my government would live by a similar standard. ed has rightly noted that many countries that had suffered through world war 1 and 2 had their dues paid by us. i wish we could return to being that nation, instead of the stingy one i now see in the news each day.
Perhaps it would be easier to pay our U.N. dues if we reduced our military budget. We now pay more for our military than the rest of the world combined, and we are hated and reviled because we unilaterally appointed ourselves the Policeman of the World. Instead of unilateral action, like our illegal invasion of Iraq, peacekeeping should be done by the international community. If we paid our dues, and participated with a U.N. peacekeeping force, they would be more effective, and we would not need to spend so much on our military.
I wouldn't mind us paying our "dues" if the U.N. were paying us rent for the land they occupy in NY and reimburse us for all the UN "peace missions" our troops participate in at OUR expense.
