Stand Up For The People Of Iraq

Stand Up For The People Of Iraq

Iraq is a test of American values and American resolve. This country used to stand for the proposition that we would bear any burden in the pursuit of freedom in the world. We cannot go back on that promise. We must continue to support and defend democratic movements in Iraq and continue to work towards the goal of a peaceful, democratic and tolerant Iraq. We cannot do that by walking away. To do so would be sign that our democratic values mean nothing.

democracy means "people power". we cannot give people power, they must take it for themselves. once i agreed with you and believed that we owed the iraqis a "fixed" country. but i'm growing more certain every day, that we do not know how to fix someone else's country, even when we are the ones who broke it. it's time to offer something besides occupation to the people we lashed out at. i'm no longer willing to imagine they want us there at all.

We need to see the progress we have made in Iraq to find our goals for Iraq's future. The biggest step we made in Iraq was the overthrow of Saddam Hussein and the 1st election, which followed soon after. Democracy does mean "people power" and by voting, every person in Iraq took a little power over their own lives. Our further steps need to be fostering a judicial sysatem that works, and helping their military to be able to preserve the steps that have been made in security of Iraq.
