Proposal for Federal Mandate of Traffic Engineering Principles

The Department of Transportation shall implement a Traffic Engineering program. The US has 250 million passenger vehicles and consumes 142 trillion gallons of gasoline per year (EIA). Despite this, traffic management is left up to cities and states which lack expertise in traffic management. Queuing methods that achieved a 5% reduction would create a savings of over 7 trillion gallons of gasoline in one year, yet this simple program does not require sweeping revision to our infrastructure.

Slow Down to Save Gas and CO2

Impose a national speed limit of 60 mph, which will save billions of dollars, barrels of oil and pounds of emissions. This is a small inconvenience that will actually save drivers money and dramatically reduce our dependence on foreign oil, as well as CO2. According to the graph at www.fueleconomy.gov, cars are most efficient between 55 and 60, after which gas consumption increases precipitously. A 55-mph speed limit was enforced in the 1970s, and the stakes, like gas prices, are higher now.

Address The Most Important Issues

I think the next President should focus on ending poverty which was Edwards' goal, not only in America but the world over. Address the food crisis going on, especially in the developing and poorer countries, address skyrocketing gas prices, alternative uses for transportaiton instead of oil, conservation funding for animals, habitats, cleaner air and water, STOP MAKING MORE NUCLEAR WEAPONS AND POWER PLANTS, GET US OUT OF IRAQ, REAL ESTATE, ADDRESS OUR ECONOMY ABOVE ALL THINGS.

Develop Land in a Smarter Way

We need to conserve more land in this country. To do that we need to learn how to speak about it in a better way. Environmentalists shouldn't try to litigate everything and polarize everyone, and big business should be more responsible about how they develop land. Hunter groups do a great job of conservation, but all of them need to realize that loss of habitat is the No. 1 threat to game. We all want our kids to have open land, so let's get to work on it Day One.
