Switch the United States over to the Metric System. Dealing with the economy will upset the environmentalists. Dealing with the environment will upset people who want the Iraq war resolved. If the first official act is a phased plan to implement the metric system, America would be showing that we were willing to really engage with the global community, and we would allow ourselves to finally fully integrate with the scientists and engineers of the world. It's the perfect symbolic 1st act.

The new president should acknowledge major past policy double standards, injustices and destructive lies. This would immediately undercut some of the marketing strategies of "terrorist" groups. The new president must exude a passion for social justice and immediately, substantively act to "walk the talk." The Dept. of Justice and DoD must be immediately de-politicized. The Guantanamo prison must be immediately closed, military justice must meet the highest standards and all renditions stopped.
