Abe Lincoln believed that democracy stood for "rule for the people, by the people". So instead of vesting power in a small group of people, who can easily be bribed, threatened or tempted into making decisions which are not truly in the best interests of the majority, why not develop a quick, convenient yet sophisticated referendum-style electronic voting system wherein all people may vote directly on each major issue, having been given just the facts and without opportunity for propaganda spin?
On day one the president should make an executive order to increase the funding and resources to TRIO and GEAR UP programs that help low-income and first generation college bound students prepare for and successfully graduate from college. These programs have helped disadvantaged students for 40+ years and would help more students help us compete globally and also stop the cycle of poverty.
