Revive the American Dream, inspire people, give them hope, be a role model in the world instead of following egoistic, short term goals.
On Day One, the president should start a new and open foreign policy, including everything from working for peace in Israel-Palestine to lifting the embargo on Cuba, so that the entire world knows that America is back and willing to work with the rest of the world in tackling international problems that we can't possibly tackle on our own.
On day one our new President Barack Obama should do two things:
1) Review and lift the Cuba embargo. It is a cold war anachronism which has failed to achieve its original goal. We need a dialogue and a pragmatic engagement with Cuban society.
2) Remove the inhuman and cruel policies of George W Bush which say that my aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces are not part of my family and prevent me from visiting them in Cuba.
3) Allow all Americans to freely travel to Cuba.
On Day One, the next president needs to take stock of how eroded and degraded our foreign policy position is with much of the world. One of the lowest-hanging-fruit opportunities to improve our foreign policy portfolio is to use people-to-people exchange, cultural exchange, and relaxed travel allowances to open up our relationship with Cuba.
