Since it will be a huge challenge to turn America into a "Green Nation", I suggest taking a small town and using it as a model for the rest of America. First, work to get the entire town off the power grid so that no fossil fuels are consumed. Secondly, redesign the public transportation system to allow for easier and more efficient access & run this system completely off hybridized or electrical power. Finally, engineer periodic "green spaces" containing forest and streams for public use.
Start an initiative within US Universities to seek to discover new, cost effective ways to make Solar Power more affordable and sustainable for the average American. If every American could run just a few of their everyday appliances off solar energy (refrigerator, TV, air conditioning, etc), think of the amount of energy they would be saving in the long run (not to mention the $$!)...
Provide an increase in funding for clean, alternative energy sources while imposing strict federal taxes on pollution-causing industries and non-renewable fuels. Also, promote more energy-efficient lifestyles in Americans through things like energy caps per household, and maybe even tax cuts for households that don't own gas powered vehicles. Lead by example, try to get Washington DC the first major city in America powered 60% by renewable energy sources.
We should also be heavily taxing petroleum based fertilizers and pesticides. These things are POISEN and are being put in to our food, our soil, our water, clothes, furniture, houses, etc. Don't you wonder why there is such a rise in all of these different types of cancer? We are giving ourselves our animals, and the earth cancer through the unchecked use of poisen. Better yet, ban the use of these dangerous chemicals altogether, practice good stewardship of our land like we have in the past.
