Adjust to the Growing Influence of Non-state Actors

The next president must systematically reevaluate the influence of non-state actors-- including corporations, nonprofits and advocacy groups--who are increasingly playing a vital role in foreign policy. It's long overdue that our policy makers adjust to this new reality, and finding the proper balance between public and private actors may be one of the most foremost challenges facing policy makers this century.

Get Rid of All of Our Nuclear Weapons

On Day One, I would ask the president to renew the U.S. commitment to nuclear nonproliferation, and in particular our commitment under Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty to work toward a world where there are no nuclear weapons. We are obliged under that treaty to get rid of all our nuclear weapons, and the other countries in the world who are pledged not to develop nuclear weapons are counting on us to stick to that obligation - if we don't follow through, there's no reason for them not to try to

Have Congress Close Guantanamo Bay

Stoller thinks that the next president should submit a bill to Congress closing Guantanamo Bay. He should do it through Congress, rather than by executive order, as a sign of respecting Congress as a coequal branch of government, and he should shut down Guantanamo because it is a symbol of a failed and immoral American policy that we need to turn the page from.

Make the Internet Free for Everyone!

If I were president, On Day One I would make the internet free for every single American. This would allow us to compete with the rest of the world in economics, science, education, and, most importantly, democracy. Technology is a tool that we can use to make democracy relevant to people's lives in the 21st century.

Passport-Checkers Should Not Have Guns!

Here's an idea: how about the next president tell the Immigration and Naturalization Service -- the people who stamp your passport -- to stop carrying guns at the airport? The U.S. is the only country where passport-checkers carry guns -- what kind of impression does that make on tourists?

Three Things the Next President Can Do

On Day One the next president should do three things: 1.) Begin to extricate troops from Iraq and allow displaced Iraqis to go home; 2.) Immediately begin an international effort to achieve peace in the Middle East; and 3.) Launch a multilateral partnership to address war, terrorism and poverty. Create a National Low-Loss Electrical Grid and Institute a Carbon Tax

The next president should do two things: first, he should begin the move to a completely renewable energy electrical system, one that uses sunlight and wind to provide all the energy we need for electricity. Second, he should be blunt with the public that, in order for energy efficiency to play the role that it can, we need to tax carbon. This will actually stimulate the economy and will put us on the road to decreasing carbon and solving the climate crisis.
