The Neglected Elephant in the Climate Change Living Room

Important as reduction of greenhouse gases is, the President needs also to address the other side of the climate issue – the world’s exploding population – by calling for a global conference on population. World population has more than tripled in my lifetime. This is a major cause of loss of forests, and hence climate change. The misery and despair that humanity will face if action is not taken to slow and eventually reverse current population growth is potentially catastrophic.

Harness wind energy at the White House

Harnessing wind energy on the White House grounds would yield financial savings on energy for the White House, benefit the environment, and inspire wind energy use elsewhere. Initially, some might regard towers and rotors as an eyesore. Farsighted people, however, might begin to view wind turbines as beautiful. According to the Amer. Wind Energy Assoc., “over its life, a small residential wind turbine can offset approximately 1.2 tons of air pollutants and 200 tons of greenhouse gases.”
