And for an explanation of why committing to nuclear disarmament makes sense as a national priority, don't miss Matthew Yglesias' On Day One contribution.
Technology is evolving at a rate that alienates legislative solutions. Many bills nurturing ethanol as a solution are in the works, but ethanol itself needs more scrutiny before it is thrust into the market. We citizens can be a better engine for accumulating good practices to drive the market. The government should emphasize our role building good industries with our wallets, instead of prompting unthinking consumption to drive the economy. The best solutions are made, not bought.
I'm tired of politicians who make promises to everyone but the people who elected them. If you look at any map in this country, you'll see how districts are drawn and redrawn by parties to maintain their seats. That ain't democracy; it's opportunism. Bring democracy back by increasing the number of Reps, to the point where they can answer their own phone calls. Make 'em know their constituents. Then at least we can tell when we're being ignored. I'm tired of being held prisoner by my zip code.
Tax it. Quit wasting money incarcerating high people and letting drunks run free. No one has ever overdosed on marijuana, people drink themselves to death all the time. Prohibition doesn't work, it just generates a much more lucrative market than the legal one. Just ask the mafia.
We can speak to people anywhere in the world almost instantaneously. This gift is under threat as the entities that enable communication collude with our government. Our forefathers were right to put free speech first among our rights, because there should be a free exchange of ideas. It should not matter who you are if your thoughts are compelling. We need to maintain our anonymity in the face of a paranoid government. The next president must insure that this net doesn't snare us.
We're a really lucky generation. We've been born into a system that keeps more of us safe and comfortable than any other that existed, and I'm grateful to the people who created it. But it's time to take the next step. It isn't enough for us to just be mostly safe and comfortable, we must also be free. And that means we must not rely on our politicians to promise safety or comfort. The next war for independence will be fought inside ourselves. No border will be secure enough if we live in fear.
