The UN is a relic of the post-World War II order. The five permanent members of the Security Council represent the major powers of 50 years ago. It is time to ensure that each permanent member state is representative of today's world. That means India, the world's largest democracy, deserves a seat at the table. France and Germany should be represented by a delegate from the EU. A requirement for Security Council membership must be democratic governance and free elections.
We need a 21st Century system of energy production. That means using safe and proven nuclear technologies, developing advanced pebble-bed reactor technologies, and recycling spent fuel to reduce the amount of radioactive material left behind. Cutting back on emissions doesn't mean making drastic sacrifices, but having a willingness to embrace new technologies and get over old fears. Nuclear energy gives us the power we need while minimizing the harm to our environment.
Iraq is a test of American values and American resolve. This country used to stand for the proposition that we would bear any burden in the pursuit of freedom in the world. We cannot go back on that promise. We must continue to support and defend democratic movements in Iraq and continue to work towards the goal of a peaceful, democratic and tolerant Iraq. We cannot do that by walking away. To do so would be sign that our democratic values mean nothing.
